Cancer is a disease that mostly, except for smokers, etc., is not preventable. Most aids cases are preventable. Before you jump my case, remember I said 'most.' reaearch should prevail on the disease that affects 'all' mankind. Even though innocent children are born with aids and some contract it by blood transfusions, etc. it is mostly a disease of a chosen lifestyle.
Cancer is a bigger problem and should get more attention.
Approximately 7 million deaths occur worldwide due to cancer (around a third are preventable). Around 2.8 million die per year due to AIDS (almost all preventable). Here are the big differences: - 2.5 million children are infected - HALF of the people who acquire HIV become infected before they turn 25 and typically die of the life-threatening illnesses called AIDS before their 35th birthday. - By the end of 2005, the epidemic had left behind 15.2 million AIDS orphans, defined as those aged under 18 who have lost one or both parents to AIDS. - AIDS is a rapidly spreading epidemic in Africa and Asia. - In some countries in sub-Saharan Africa the infection rate is around 40% Cancer tends to be something people get at a later stage of life. AIDS is the opposite. The impact of AIDS on the family structure, social structure and the stability of various countries is enormous. One shouldn't be faced with a choice here, but as far as the overall impact to the world across the board, I would say AIDS currently has a more devastating impact. AIDS can be managed in most cases, the issue is often with the cost of drugs. Also, when a young person contracts it in Africa, they are essentially unable to reproduce (unless they want their children infected). A cure or vaccine would help return stability to many countries. If I had to choose, I would pick AIDS for more funding.
How fortunate we are that we aren't dealing with a zero-sum game where every dollar for one affliction doesn't have to come at the expense of another. I agree, not enough attention is spent on AIDS research. I disagree that too much is spent on Cancer research. I agree that a large portion of what we waste on militarys pending should go to both of these causes.
cancer
Cathexis, I so agree with you. As of a few minutes ago the cost of the war in Iraq was at just under 287,000,000,000 dollars. How disgusting and shameful. Sure would go a long way for medical reaearch. We spend more money on killing people than we do on trying to save them. 4
Like others mentioned, AIDS is almost totally preventable while cancer usually isn't. Both need research but imo cancer needs more research.

Last time I looked, the numbers alone put that argument to idiocy. Though AIDS is a serious issue, its transmission is preventable, to a degree. Cancer is another matter entirely.
me being affected with the loss of someone who battled cancer for 4 years im gonna have to say cancer is a way bigger problem and i agree 100% with xhiker
I think Cancer is the bigger problem. Those of us who live healthy lifestyles are still at risk, merely because of age. HIV and AIDS can be prevented with what we have right now.
