Many say its Northern, and others say Southern. Quite a few Virginians, especially in the northern half or even the northern two-thirds of the state act and even to a degree, varying from person to person, sound kind of northern. It was well known for its strong institution of slavery however, and its large numbers of Confederate soldiers, though it probably didn't contribute as many Rebel soldiers as other states in the South did. Furthermore, Virginia actually formed Union regiments (from the Commonwealth, but not the area of what would become West Virginia). Most of the area around Virginia Beach, Norfolk and areas west of it are essentially Southern, but much of the state is like the North. Where do you believe it fits in? It is part of the North.
