UN told of mass Darfur killings
The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court says he has documented evidence of thousands of killings of civilians in Sudan's Darfur region.

Luis Moreno Ocampo, investigating alleged crimes against humanity, says the killings include large-scale massacres and hundreds of rapes.

In a report to the UN, he also criticised Sudan's own investigations.

The report is seen as significant as the court may only prosecute if Sudan has not provided justice for victims.

Unveiling his report, Mr Ocampo told the BBC his team had been working from outside of Darfur, including a field office in neighbouring Chad, but had faced "serious obstacles".

He added: "We are now entering a new phase where unconditional co-operation will be essential to complete the investigation and identify those most responsible for crimes committed in Darfur."

A "Darfur crimes database", collated by investigators from the court, lists thousands of alleged murders, including massacres of hundreds of people at a time.

Eyewitnesses recounted the attackers saying things like, "we will drive you out of this land"Mr Ocampo's report to the UN Security Council says some two million people have been displaced by violence in Darfur.

The first few months of 2006 saw increases in people forced from their homes in several areas of Darfur marked by increased violence, Mr Ocampo says.

The Sudanese government has said its judiciary will investigate the incidents, but Mr Ocampo says that Sudan does not seem to be investigating and prosecuting the cases that are of interest to the court.

Mr Ocampo says Sudan's government has agreed to interviews with government officials, to begin in August this year.

Some 200,000 people are thought to have died in Darfur, a vast region in the west of Sudan, in a three-year conflict.

Most have died in attacks by pro-government militias against civilians.

Rebel forces took up arms in February 2003, accusing the government of discriminating against Darfur's black Africans in favour of Arabs.

A partial peace deal was agreed in May, but not all sides signed the agreement and fears have grown over worsening conditions in camps home to displaced people.

The International Criminal Court was set up by the UN in 2002 to prosecute individuals for war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity.

The UN is running out of excuses not to act, especially now that they have to go on record officially acknowledging that genocide is happening (it's easier to do nothing when they were pretending nothing was going on).

So, now, do you think they'll finally begin some sort of meaningful intervention?

I doubt it'll matter.

Of course the rest of us knew about the genocide years ago, but the UN has always been a little slow.

Of course if they wait long enough the problem will solve itself. When everyone is dead then there is no longer an ongoing genocide to worry about.

But Herzog. you dont actually care about these people anyway. Why do you go on about it so?

You have used this genocide as an excuse to be smug about how ineffective the UN are. You're a maggot of a man.

geez louise! what does it take? a house to fall on them? talk about being slow out of the gate.

They won't react for the same reason people on this site don't. Racism and they just don't give a crap about what happens to a bunch of nameless mostly poor people in Sudan.

At least picking on the UN brings folks' attention to Darfur.
I think that's a good thing!

That and gives herzog a hard on. No offence the UN is a difficult and relatively pointless force. Why go on about it when we know its true? America isnt the answer. so whats the point?

Would it not be simpler to discuss Darfur Jyl? Rather than trying to make it the fault of someone else? It's already someones fault before the UN get there.

We cant solve darfur by pointing fingers.

Why has neo-con icon, George W. Bush not expressed his outrage about the U.N's inaction?

Perhaps he's too busy negotiating with the Iranians.

Let's see...

Since this has been going on for- how many *years*?- before they manage to notice it happening (clearly, the UN doesn't get CNN), how long might it take them to actually *move* in that direction?

I'd say as soon as they strike oil in the area. Or find a way to get all of those conflict diamonds out of the ground safely.
