COMMENTS:
I suppose so, but it sure is a shame to have to force people to honor their own flag.

Geez, is this really THE pressing issue of the day?

When is the last time you heard of a protester burning a flag, anyway?

Guess it's easier than addressing real issues, though ...

I'll support this after they pass an amendment that guarantees everyone a living wage and health care.

As much as the concept enrages me, I weigh it with the knowledge that, should someone feel the need to burn Old Glory, the worst that could happen to them is jail time and a large fine. In a lot of countries, it's a bullet in the head, and a bill to the next-of-kin for the cost of the aforementioned.
by Truthseeker013 on Thu Jun 15, 06 2:08pm [+]

it's DUMB to burn the flag but we sure don't have constitutional amendments against being dumb.
There are at least a million things more worthy of those old lawmen's time.

Of course not. As soon as we start jailing people for flag burning, we are a step closer to jailing them for speech -- and then to putting them away for not agreeing with us.
Why, before you know it, we will be jailing people for burning pictures of the president...

Silly issue to get your pantyhouse in a knot, I'd say.

I don't think so either
by oh_what_a_relief on Thu Jun 15, 06 3:41pm [+]

No. Its my flag too and if I ever decide I want to burn one in protest, its my right. People get way to upset over that. If people are unhappy and want change and burning a flag is a way of showing that dissatisfaction, more power to them.
by patch22us on Thu Jun 15, 06 4:26pm [+]

actually, i think ou're actually supposed to burn a flag instead of throwing it out.

i don't know why it's so important, it's just a coloured cloth.
by neothe1 on Thu Jun 15, 06 5:40pm [+]

^yes, it's tradition to burn an old flag rather than put it in the trash.
by Jyl on Thu Jun 15, 06 9:30pm [+]

hard to ban it then
by neothe1 on Fri Jun 16, 06 12:05am [+]

xhiker: I believe you have hit the nail on the head, although I disagree with your conclusion.

You can't mandate respect for the flag. People have to feel it and a government has to earn it.
by Cathexis on Fri Jun 16, 06 8:23am [+]

what's truly sad is when you have more pride in your FLAG than your COUNTRY.
