BLACKS ARE FADING FROM BASEBALL

[+] serious ballot by herzog
created Mon Jun 19, 06

When U.S. Sen. Jim Talent co-sponsored legislation to proclaim May 20, 2006, as "Negro Leaguers Recognition Day," he had scant notion of its true necessity or the paradox it entailed.

Nearly 60 years after Jackie Robinson burst through baseball’s color barrier, U.S.-born African-American players are virtually vanishing from the game. Three decades after blacks made up nearly 30 percent of major league rosters, they now make up about 8 percent — less than half the 17.25 percent of 1959, the first year every team was integrated.

The trend has come home to roost on the roster of the Cardinals, who currently have zero blacks on their major league roster and almost none in their farm system.

"I didn’t realize the numbers had shrunk so much," said Talent, R-Mo.

Clearly this is proof of racism in major league baseball. Blacks make up around 12% of the population, but only 8% of major leage players? Sheesh, those owners probably want to go back to having a seperate colored league as well.

So isn't it time for some good ol' fashion affirmative action in major league baseball to clear this discrepency up?

Yes, 8% black is intolerable, these racist teams need to be sent a message
No, hire the best one, AA should only apply to minor things like med school and air traffic control
No, Affirmative action is wrong, any discrepency can be explained by factors other than racism
Did you notice all the hispanics playing baseball?

(sigh) I've addressed this logic flaw so many times already ... to no avail.

Logic and reasoning just can't stand up to ingrained biases, I guess.

Cath, let me explain the way the world works to you.

Gather round children.

Affirmative action is used to address 'historical wrongs'. For instance, there are too few black and female CEOs, clearly there are racist barriers that need to be removed to produce more minority CEOs. Same with doctors, lawyers, etc. Proof of actually discrimination is never needed, or is incidental. The proof itself is the discrepency between the minority population in general and within a given field. So, only 3% of doctors are black, say no more, med schools are racist and must begin filling quotas.

Never mind that fewer minorities apply and fewer are qualified, there aren't enough buddhist black lesbian doctors out there, clearly there is discrimination.

The only place this logic isn't applied are in fields where minorities typically dominate, such as proffessional sports. Now that this is changing I think we can expect to see calls for affirmative action in baseball.

I don't think anyone on this site is as race obsessed as you. There are more blacks playing basketball than whites, clearly what's needed is for some 'good ol' fashion affirmative action' to clear this other discrepency, or maybe, as the saying goes 'white men can't jump.'

If this trend continues, soon it will be safe for white racists to go back to the ballpark.

No, wait. What about all those Hispanics?

Doh!

So your saying Latinos can't be black.

Good point Herzog. You know, I've noticed there are no anglo janitors or solid waste engineers around. Hey, maybe you could break that barrier and be Larry Bird of rubbish. Nevermind, I forgot, that would require working for a living.

The reason that baseball has fewer Black players is becasue it's no longer the Great American Pastime, as adverted. More kids in Latin America grow up with the game than we do here. And baseball has a much harder hierarchical structure to climb than other sports, including basketball, where any kid who thinks he has the stuff can just pop right into the NBA from high school. (Well, he *could* until last season.)

aya, a "wetback" is one of those really nasty, stupid little words we can do without as a species.

Ostensibly, it refers to Hispanics, particularly Cubans and Mexicans, who enter the US by crossing bodies of water, thereby "getting their backs wet". For the record, let me say that this also applies to anyone who came over here from Europe or Asia before 1950. Basically, save for the First People, *most* of us *are* wetbacks. Enjoy, folks!
by Truthseeker013 on Mon Jun 19, 06 2:16pm [+]

Affirmative action is racist and should not be tolerated by civil people.

btw, I think blacks are still overrepresented as MVPs. Also, a lot of the Latin American players have significant African ancestry.

I think this has nothing to do with racism. It has to do with money and avaliability. Baseball compared to football and basketball is much more expensive. there are not many baseball diamonds in the inner city. there are basket ball courts and open fields everywhere. In football and basketball all you really need is a ball. Baseball you need balls, bats, gloves just to play. I wanted to play baseball but Nobody ever had gloves or just nobody was really interested in playing. Plus basketball and football you can become a pro much quicker and get that money if you are really good. Baseball on the other hand you have to go through the farm system even if you are really good. But thats just my opinion.

Alot of hispanics call it their "pasttime" because it is relatively easy to play and their only way to circumvent thier usually low end careers such as cleaning and picking fruits/vegetables. Baseball is one of 2 things hispanics/latinos are good at, the other being low end labor jobs. How often do you see blacks and hispanics as doctors, surgeons, and so forth? Only in their indigenous countries can they do that, and its usually pretty bad too. Did you ever see the operating rooms, scary!
