Callous as it sounds, I'd have to knwo the circumstances.

I'm sure someone will make a tie-in with abortion and other 'special' circumstances, with which I wouldn't necessarily feel a compunction to stop.

Even if it's a rat bastich about to stop a bullet, I'd give warning, to spare the cost of a trial. Better to let that person develop a lingering, painful disease.

Please explain yourself cathexis. I'm having a hard time understanding under what "circumstances" you would not feel obligated to act.

but define murder.

We invaded iraq and killed all those people, are you suggesting we try to stop Bush?
by LCD on Mon Jun 19, 06 3:50pm [+]

Murder: The crime of unlawfully killing a person especially with malice aforethought.
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Mon Jun 19, 06 3:52pm [+]

Quite apart from anything else, to fail to act would diminish our own humanity. A double murder, almost, of the soul.
by xxxxxxxx on Mon Jun 19, 06 4:24pm [+]

^narrow definition indeed.

so state sanctioned murder is okay then.

so why are we so upset at Hussein and Hitler?
by LCD on Mon Jun 19, 06 4:55pm [+]

cath, et al, wouldn't that be vigilanteism? As we've all been told, when you see a crime being committed you should sit idly by and do nothing, and not tell anyone. Right?
by herzog on Mon Jun 19, 06 7:02pm [+]

LCD, that is the Webster's Dictionary definition. I didn't intend this ballot as a political ballot.

I'm having a hard time understanding this comment "so state sanctioned murder is okay then." I made no such statement, nor did anyone else.
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Mon Jun 19, 06 9:40pm [+]

herz: No. Vigilantism goes beyond 'stopping crimes' -- it actively seeks out perceived crimes. Major difference. The danger, of course, is in the lack of training/ qualifications to be a professional law enforcer (or do they go to academies for their health?) and questionable judgment. Oh, and possible psychological problems.
by Cathexis on Tue Jun 20, 06 6:27am [+]

FF: My hesitency is as LCD describes ... what actually constitutes 'murder.' Now, if the act is as I am familiar with it, then yes ... I probably would.

If it involves significant personal danger coupled with improbable success ... I probably still would, but this is irresponsible, as I have people who depend on me in their lives.
by Cathexis on Tue Jun 20, 06 6:28am [+]

After seeing the tortured twistings and spin of the GOP these past five years, I am hesitent to just throw my full support into a situation that may ned up defined to be totally different than what I envision.
by Cathexis on Tue Jun 20, 06 6:29am [+]

Ah, so if you hear a woman scream, then go to investigate you are a vigilante because you are actively seeking out a crime?

What about neighborhood watches? They are likewise vigelantes aren't they? They are just common people 't actively seeking out perceived crimes'
by herzog on Tue Jun 20, 06 6:35am [+]

No way I would never act unless it was one of my mates. To bad if some one was getting killed if you dont know the person y would you feel bad.
