In the last few years these three countries have obtained the ability to make nuclear warheads.
So far only China has successfully test fired a long-range missile. North Korea as we speak is preparing to test fire one.
Iran in can launch a short-range missile to Israel now.
So of these three countries which do you think will be the first one to fire their new found Power first? And why?

North Korea
Iran
China

COMMENTS:
None of those are *likely*.

Iran doesn't have anything to launch. China ... too sane. That leaves NK ... which is still very remote.

hey Cathexis i have to agree with you on North Korea. but don't totally discount china it is the sleeping bear. if any country does something that they don't like don't think for a second that they would not attack in a heart beat. remember when hong kong was wanting to become it's own country and britan and the U.S. wanted to support them but china threatened then that they would take it by force. also if memory serves me right the same thing is going on with Taiwan they are threatening to take it by force when it is supposed to go back to them or something like that sorry it has been awhile and my memory is not all that great. this much i do remember it was about 6 years ago when this was mentioned and now you can't find any info on it. but any way just to say do not totally discount china:-)

trebor: Granted, but I don't see China doing a pre-emptive launch ... it would take a major provocation for this to be a legitimate danger -- and chances ar ethis would be resolved through other means, IMO.

I do believe that China will become the next Bogeyman for the paranoic Right in the US, though.

cathexis I don't think it is paranoia to be concerned about china. In fact because of us not being concerned china has the capabilities they have now. We gave them the technology to reach us with nukes. If they attack us I don’t know. But where I do know they will be getting involved with real soon and that is the middle east because of Iran, India, Pakistan and those nations down there because if they decide to blow each other up it will effect china directly From the after math. So being concerned about China and her capabilities and her willingness to use it is not a conservative or a liberal problem it is a world Problem. And because we rely so much on Middle Eastern oil it is a U.S. problem as well. And keep in mind as well that we are in direct competition with china for the Middle Eastern oil. They are the only country that uses it more that we do (from what I understand)

trebor: IMO, the major danger is if we allow the current group of rightwing paranoid neocons to establish a foreign policy that forces a situation where China has no choice but to be 'in opposition.'

Britain, Germany, and France are military powers. We don't worry about them because we have established relations. The same can be done with China, if we are open to the possibilities and don't react to the knee- jerk propaganda we're fed.

Cathexis: I do agree that we do have to be careful how we deal with them. But to say it is a liberal or conservative problem I would have to disagree. Because the liberals have done just as much to make them a problem as the conservatives have. We cannot deal with them in a passive way nor can we deal with them in a super aggressive way either.
The reason we have good relations with Germany and France is because they knew that if they tried to take over the world again that we with Britain’s help would kick their butts again. And with Britain they have no desire to force their will on anyone.
Whereas China is seeking to control over the world one way or another. You can’t be passive with a bully that has a death wish. Nor can you intimidate him either. The smartest thing would have been to keep them from having the capability and the liberals did that. So like I said it is best not to try to blame liberals or conservatives when we both are being stupid, IMO :-)
