Well, I was going to go with a quick rabbit punch to the kidney, but methinks I like zig's idea better...
I'd try to break it up, and if that failed it would mean I'd had my butt kicked, and I would limp home and lick my wounds.
I usually carry pepper spray/foam and/or a taser, so I'd probably intervene somehow if they started going at it -- especially since I've worked as a clerk in so many different jobs.
I'd try to stop it -- verbally at first, escalating as necessary.
