So many good ones. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Faith No More, Kyuss, Smashing Pumpkins. If we are going for pure musicianship - Tool for their drumming, Pearl Jam for their guitars, Soundgarden for their vocals. Fuck it! They were/are all too good to choose.
...forgot Radiohead. But they have become far better since the turn of the century.
Erm Iron Maiden were around in the early 80's
^Yes, but they were still around in the 90's and still a great band of musicians, even though the album quality went down a tad.
Good to see Jane's challenging at the top early on. IMO, very underrated musically compared to most of the bands on the list.
I agree with all of wolf's acknowledgements, apart from Kyuss who I haven't heard. The underrated Soundgarden were well rounded. Excellent drumming, guitars and bass. Radiohead are a tad underrated, Phil Selway's a better drummer than given credit for. Superb performances on The Bends and OK Computer.
Mogwai.
Well fuck me, Tool have finally recieved a vote.
Yeah I've heard Phish are brilliant musicians though I'm not familiar with them.
Can people put in bands and not stupid choices please? The idea is that you're meant to put in the name of a band, or vote on one of the choices already there.
Wow, Soundgarden really making progress after a slow start. Deservedly so.
^I'd agree The Verve were pretty good musically but the others were uneven or plain mediocre don't you think?
"Remember we're ranking bands purely on musicianship here. Who reigned? Who were the 'kings' of their instruments?" That's a darn awful way of ranking the bands - on their musicianship. You'd end up with some jazz fusion band that were so far up their own a**es that only a doctor of music could understand their music after four years research. Wouldn't it be better if you asked people to vote for the band they LIKED most?
^That's true keithsheen which is precisely why I inserted the bit into the title - not including jazz or classical musicians and the like.
*'rock' bit into the title
Voted : Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam is hands down the best rock group of the 90's and they put on the best show still to this day
Voted : deftones
Who compares? They can't be categorized or labeled. The Deftones influences (Depeche Mode, Weezer, Korn) have molded their sound into something no less than extraordinary.
