SHOULD GOVERNMENT DETERMINE WHAT THE MEDIA REPORTS?

[+] serious ballot by Cathexis
ACTIVE Wed Jun 28, 06 - Mon Feb 18, 08

In reference to the NY Times article uncovering more Bush Administration activities that may affect Privacy, the National Review Online asserts:

'President Bush, who said on Monday morning that the exposure 'does great harm to the United States of America,' must demand that the New York Times pay a price for its costly, arrogant defiance. The administration should withdraw the newspaper's White House press credentials because this privilege has been so egregiously abused, and an aggressive investigation should be undertaken to identify and prosecute, at a minimum, the government officials who have leaked national- defense information.'

Setting aside for a moment the fact that the LA Times and Wall Street Journal also covered this story (making attacks aimed solely at the NYT appear to be scapegoating) ...

... Do you think the government should determine what the media reports as news?

Yes: Government should control
Yes: But only in certain, restricted cases
No: Although Media should act responsibly
No Rupert Murdoch decides
No that’s fascism

COMMENTS:
I don't think the government should allow the media to publish nuclear launch codes, for example. One would hope that the media is responsible when it comes to reporting things that may harm citizen's lives or may impair the ability of the country to fight a war.

To put it simply that’s fascism and anyone who believes that government should decide what the media can and cant report is a fascist.
