COMMENTS:
From what I have seen, (sorry if this is a sterotype or is considered politically incorrect), but Asian parents are a lot stricter and do force and pressure their children to study hard at school and to push for a good career. I have seen some Latin-American and African-American parents push their children in such a way as well- and their children usually end up doing well. It seems parenting and familistic values are an important factor.
You're right socrates, they place a very high value on education. I know quite a few asians.
Education is the key, especially if you are non white. You cannot beat the system it seems, so its best to fight the system from within to bring about change. Higher grades means better job prospects.
And holding the family together. Education is the key, white or not. And, Steelhamster, in USA, there is equal opportunity. Where do you hail from?
I hate to generalize in any circumstance but I have no choice here.In general Asian Americans put a higher value on studying and education than do Latino or African Americans and thus they are more successful.Asian parents put alot of pressure on their kids to do well and succeed and this pressure pushes them into the higher income levels of American society.
A superior culture and average level of intelligence.
Dazzle: And, Steelhamster, in USA, there is equal opportunity. Where do you hail from? London, in the UK. Are you able to say what you said with a straight face? Money buys education, the same as it does with everything in the US. Equality exists as long as you can pay for the right sort of 'equality'.
The culture that is around them is family. And that your success and failure reflects on the family fully. With that the parents will force there kids to be the best. Because they don't want to look bad.
Steelhamster- "Are you able to say what you said with a straight face? Money buys education, the same as it does with everything in the US. Equality exists as long as you can pay for the right sort of 'equality'." - And... that really is more about class and economic status, isn't it? What does that have to do with race? Or do you think it is a combination of class and race?
thc2883- "A superior culture and average level of intelligence." - I think that is perhaps an exaggeration.
How readily we all accept the premise. First, I'd want some objective data indicating the initial premise. "From what I've seen" is not enough to establish the generality.
Cathexis- From what I've perceived and then some. The above users I assume agree with initial premise. Which actually shocked me, I assumed the very first comment would be disputing that. Since they didn't dispute something which is quite disputable, it seems they believe it themselves.
Lies and slander, its because of their work ethic, culture and iq. There are only isolated instances of extremist parents forcing their kids to study perpetually. Wake up and smell the coffee, the people don't want to be burger flippers, hotel maids, vegetable/fruit pickers, or any other no skills demeaning occupations. These people work HARD so they will amount to something and be successful, very successful.
I am not generalizing by the way, there are the exceptions and quiet a few too. Just not as many as some of the other ethnic groups. Somebody has to do those crappy, back breaking jobs. I mean, what if there weren't any low skill people and everyone was "successful". Who would serve us at restaraunts, make our McDonalds, pick our vegetables/fruits, who will be the janitors and so forth?
Socrates What am I exaggerating? The IQ data is strong and comes from multiple sources. Cultural superiority is arguable, but Hispanic culture doesn't place as much emphasis on academic achievement as East Asian cultures do. East Asian culture also has a stronger work ethic.
