DID THE US INVASION NAKE THINGS WORSE IN IRAQ?

Saddam' regime was brutal - no question. There were prisons and executioners, torture, repression and little freedom of speech. But at least the violence came from one source - Saddam's regime.

But now, the violence is all around, from all directions. Based on a memo from the American embassy in Baghdad, in June 2006, outside the Green Zone there is electricity maybe one hour out of three. Sectarian violence is exploding. Because of the power vaccuum, corruption is rampant. You can't trust your neighbours.

Now, death can come from anywhere, at all times, no matter who you are. You can be killed for crossing the street, for going to the market, for driving your car, for having the wrong name, for being in your house, for being a Sunni, for being a Shia, for being a woman. The American military can kill you in an operation by mistake or otherwise, you can be arrested by militias and disappear in Iraq's new secret prisons, now run by Shias, or you can be kidnapped by the resistance, or by criminal gangs.

COMMENTS:
hard to make the argument that it's better.

Bush should look up the word "diplomacy" ini a dictionary.

But I do know their morgues are filling up faster than they can deal now.

Democracy cannot be forced on another country-the very nature of it does not allow that to happen. Democracy should come from the people-not an invading army.

The news we recieve is mainly from the Baghdad area - for them, life is apparantly worse. This is debatable, as almost all western journalists are unable to leave the green zone. They rely on independent Iraqy photographers and journalists to give them the news - which primarily is just reports of car bombs. These Iraqy journalist are not in positions to report conclusively on much else.

There are many places that are not in the Baghdad area that are peaceful and are better off.

To give you a general answer, I don't know - currently for some no, but i think for the majority - yes.

For the majority -- No.

More dead.
Less security (overall) -- taking into account military strikes/ operations, armed militias, kidnappings, explosives, etc.
Less dependable access to electricity, clean water, gasoline.
