I am against mandatory helmet laws.

I've been a motorcyclist since 16.

My point is that if we are going to force someone to wear helmets, well we should make all the skiers, golf cart riders, convertible drivers, etc to wear them too.

I miss being able to ride out in the country road, 35mph in spring, with the wind in my hair and bugs in my teeth. it's my god given right to determine when it's warranted to wear helmets and when it's not.

I won't even get into the harley riders on freeways with a little beanie helmets going 90mph...

No I don't believe that the government should force a grown adult to protect himself if he does not want to.Ofcourse if he gets into an accident he should not be able to sue the state for not warning him about the dangers of driving without a helmet.

I'm for freedom of choice. But I would hope that someone has the sense enough to make the choice of wearing one when a situation warrants it.

"I won't even get into the harley riders on freeways with a little beanie helmets going 90mph.."

It's not just the Harley riders. It's the 'kids' on these crotch rockets wearing shorts and tanktops and no helmet tht says "Stupidity". At least the Harley riders have enough sense to wear riding leathers.

I've seen what can happen to someone when they meet up with a car while on a motorcycle. It's not pretty. I've also been in that situation myself and wouldnt be here now if I hadnt have had a helmet on. You can be a carefull rider with years of experience, but all it takes is some unattentive dumbass in a car or truck and then your life is changed forever.

^^ good point.

Its been mandatory in the UK since the late 1970s.

Saved many lives, so even though you may not look so cool, would you take not being cool for not being dead?
by Steelhamster on Wed Jul 12, 06 5:13pm [+]

^^ I agree, living is always preferalbe to death.

but by the same logic, shouldn't we outlaw skydiving, scuba diving, convertibles, speedboating, atv's, waterskis, etcetc? where do we draw the line?
by LCD on Wed Jul 12, 06 5:17pm [+]

Those activities dont have others in the same space pissed drunk and behind a 2 ton vehicle.

The roads are cluttered with morons, best take precautions.
by Steelhamster on Wed Jul 12, 06 5:46pm [+]

that is true, although in that case those drunk morons should be legislated, not the innocent bikers.
by LCD on Wed Jul 12, 06 5:57pm [+]

No.

If there were such a thing as a motorcycle peer group, maybe they could make an "informed" decision. A decision about helmet laws should be made by riders and not polititions or the unaffected public. Let licensed motorcycle riders vote; they are the only people sffected by it. Just attach a ballot to the vehicle registration and you would have representative decision.
by remote_observer on Wed Jul 12, 06 6:04pm [+]

There are strict drink driving laws in the UK and a concerted ad campaign on TV showing the aftermath of alcohol.

Even this doesnt stop people drinking and driving.
by Steelhamster on Wed Jul 12, 06 6:12pm [+]

Bollocks to that.
