"Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad vowed to help Syria -- which shares a defense pact with Iran -- if it is attacked.

"If the occupying regime commits another stupid move and attacks Syria, this will be considered as an attack against the whole Islamic world and that regime will receive a fierce response," read a statement by Ahmadinejad that was broadcast on state television on July 13.

Analysts say that as the tensions rise, the possibilities for state-to-state warfare increase."

The Iranian talk tought but there's no way in hell Iran would run to Syria's aid if Israel attacked Damascus. The Iranis now that if they start a war with Israel then they would start the third World War.

For several reasons (all speculation, on my part):

* Perception that the West, with Israel, have goal of taking over Mid-East would instill a mindset of "If we don't make a united stand now, our country will be next."

If Syria was successfully overthrown, that constititutes a trend, for many.

* May be some number of Muslim "End- of- Worlders" in influential places who believe such an apocalyptic confrontation signals prophetic culmination.

* Perception that US military is an over- stretched paper tiger, from observations of Iraq conflict.

* Belief that, through oil holdings or treaties, enough nations would side with them or (at least) not array against them to make it worthwhile.

* Gambling that there may be a possibility to get rid of the Israeli problem, and then sue for peace.

And Israel will find out what it is to be cowed.

Lebanon has been struggling to recover from decades of civil war and the ousting of Syria from its borders, so they are in no state to defend themselves from the Israeli arsenal.

Israel will soon realise they will be standing alone as the US will not directly come to its aid, as they are having their collective arses handed to them in Iraq and Afghanistan, they will certainly be less than enthused about attacking another group of middle eastern countries.

Israel are very brave against civilians who throw stones and a few terrorits, an all out assault may show up their arrogance.

Paper tiger is an apt description indeed.

I feel your pain Steel, but Israel isn't a paper tiger. Israel is a lot of things, but "paper tiger?" I wouldn't want to F with the Choosen People.
by elvislennon on Fri Jul 14, 06 11:36am [+]

Steel you must be kiding do you really think that Israel is a paper tiger?A country that held off SIX arab nations at once during the six day war is a paper tiger?

Rolls eyes @ steelhamster

Iran is very happy with fighting a proxy war with Israel. The missile Hezbollah is using are made in Iran. Iran has shipped over 1 billion in military equipment to Hezbollah.

What you see is what Iran threatened to do if they didn't get their way with the nuclear issue. Use their influence to inflame the region and distract from the real issue of their nuclear weapons program.

"And Israel will find out what it is to be cowed."

Sure, steel. What weapons does Iran have that can reach Israel? Do they have any fighters or bombers that can reach that far? All they have is a bunch of ancient US planes and some crappy French stuff.

"US will not directly come to its aid, as they are having their collective arses handed to them in Iraq and Afghanistan"

Oh really? Pro-western governments are in charge in both Afghanistan and Iraq. Sure there are terrorist attacks in Iraq, but those are mostly directed at other Iraqis. The coalition military hasn't had the asses handed to them.

Paper tiger? LOL.

I suppose you are hoping that Israel is defeated in their war to defeat terrorist groups. I know this is what I read in the socialist/communist news-rags coming out of the UK.
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Fri Jul 14, 06 2:01pm [+]

If you believe thats what I think, you really do not know me at all.

People seem to forget that the six day war was in the 1960s.

If Israel really wanted to attack terrorists it would turn to Syria or Iran or both.

Why do they not? Because Israel prefers soft targets and civilians.

The Israeli apologists make the Islamist ones look almost reasonable.
by Steelhamster on Fri Jul 14, 06 2:49pm [+]

They would certainly come to each other's aid. Iran also has military defence pact with Russia, and Russia has very strong interests in protecting Iran.

steelhamster hasn't caught up on what Syria and Iran's modern military capabilities, and Israel is seriously worried about Syria. Don't kid yourself. The Syrians are not a weak poor nation.

Times have changed.

Iran has supersonic cruise missiles, and Israel has no defence against them. Neither does the US Navy.

Iran has long been reputed to have the best fighter pilots in the middle east, but you can guarantee Russia will get involved to protect Iran. Putin and the Russian government have repeatedly said that if Israel attacks Iran, that Russia will reply in kind against Israel. Putin has threatened to turn Israel into a cinder if Israel uses it's nuclear arsenal in any way.

It's like the Baltic powerkeg situation of World War 1.

Don't you think it's more than a little strange that the Hezbollah leadership have repeatedly said that they are not the group firing missiles into Israel?

Of course, you'll say they're lying, but I can show you photos of Israelis pretending to be Arab terrorists. They've done it before. They got caught out before.
by Tank_Girl on Fri Jul 14, 06 6:21pm [+]

Who does the fighting benefit? Does it benefit Iran or the Hezbollah? I don't see how.

The invasion of Lebanon was planned several weeks ago too. Israel was going to do it anyway. They just needed an excuse, how do we know the excuse was not manufactured?
by Tank_Girl on Fri Jul 14, 06 6:23pm [+]

Steel how do you know that Israel will not turn on Syria or Iran in the coming days?We are only two days into this current conflict and it could very well turn into a full scale war.I hope that does not happen.
by Corrupt on Fri Jul 14, 06 6:47pm [+]

Steel is right. The United States will not be able to come to the aid of Israel. We will not be in a position to and that is from external pressures and threats, as well as internal. No one listens. No one ever listens.

Read the mood of the people. Not on THIS site, but in real life. People cried wolf once to often. When it comes right down to it... CORPORATIONS control this country and most all others. No WAY they will allow any move to side with Israel, because everyone knows it would just be us and Israel with the whole world arrayed against us. Nope. We may be talking tough, but the power elite that run this "global village" will offer Israel up like a burnt offering. Besides, thanks to George W. Bush needing to finance his tax cuts and OVER-SPENDING!! Our own enemies can now dicate OUR fiscal policy to a significant degree.

Oh yes, what a wonderful President he is. Sadly, the USA will be just fine, but Israel won't. All the years of manipulation and a heavy-handed, unfair foreign policy by the USA has come home to bite us (really them) in the butt!

So? Whats the point? I'm asking an honest question. I read all sorts of horrible stuff on here about Palestinians and Arabs in general that pretty much talks about wiping them out. So thats okay, but not if its Israel?

by patch22us on Sat Jul 15, 06 8:13pm [+]

Yes they would. At this point in time they would very likely aid them. With Isreal being good friends with the U.S I think they would. From what i see Iran is trying to start a war with the U.S and that would be the perfect way. I think that Iran and Syria would get stomped on though because the U.S,Canada and Europe would supply Isreal with anything they needed including troops.

Also steelhamster the U.S isnt getting there asses handed to them in Iraq in Afghanistan. The u.s isnt at war with Iraq anymore being as that we beat there military. The only problem the u.s is having is that bush is to retarded to fight a war. He has no plans for the u.s military and is only leaving our troops there to wait until a terrorist attack happen to them. He has made a new plan for the Iraqi freedom but doesnt plan on using it until January.
by US_MarineCorp69 on Sun Dec 17, 06 6:12pm [+]

Another problem with the war is that the u.s needs to send more troops into Iraq. We have around 2.5 million troops but around 250-300 thousand are in iraq.
