When you give it some careful consideration, both insults have their advantages and their disadvantages. For instance, depending on who's making the accusation, being called an ass by a dear acquiantance could be interpreted as a gesture of mild annoyance, whereas being called an asshole in the same circumstances would warn you that your relationship with this individual could be in jeopardy. If a stranger calls you an asshole, it's a challenge, you are being called out, possibly for being too assertive in a certain situation...but your dignity remains intact. However, if in the same situation, a stranger just callsyou an ass, then shakes his/her head in disgust, then your very being is called in to question. Overall though, what's worse? Ass or asshole?
