What do you think would happen if on spelling test in school there was a word such as "rhyme" but the person spelled it as "rime" which is a an alternate but correct spelling?

Teacher would consider it wrong
It would be counted right
May I have etymology please?
Ketchup/Catsup

COMMENTS:
Same works with "gray" and "grey". I would be very angry if the teacher counted it wrong.

If the teacher counted it wrong, I would send them a note saying "wtf?". I think if you argued your point, you should get extra credit.

That happened to me when I was six. I was on my way to winning the entire elementary school spelling bee championship for my school when I spelled "encyclopedia" but was counted wrong because the teacher insisted on the far more obscure "encyclopaedia" spelling. They reconsidered their decision after realizing they had made a six-year-old cry, however. *^)
