Over time, continents have moved around on techtonic plates. Could the Rocky Mountains have formed when North America collided with another continent, absorbing it into itself to create the mountaneous western region that you see today? The collision obviously would have taken place over a long period of time.

No, it is the usual tectonic plate movement like with every other mountain range. There is no evidence of a collision, just subduction and all that blah blah blah. You get the picture.
