That said, there ARE plenty of ugly Americans who wouldn't survive 10 days in places like Somalia and Sudan.

Not all. But there is a significant number from my experience that indeed can be peceived to be quite arrogant. Per capita, probably more than most other nations.
Other nations with significant numbers of arrogant people would be: Britain, France, Russia, and probably Japan.
^And would your country be among that list? Arrogance is a feature of many human beings no matter what country they are from. I dont see how you can point to particular countries. Its a genralisation, a stereotype.

I think most of the claims of arrogance are the result of jealously from those who don't like the fact that America is the dominant country in the world.
People at the bottom always take cheap shots at those at the top.
And people at the top often exploit those at the bottom.
The US has a fantastic military, no doubt about that what so ever but to say it's the best when your fighting tribesmen with rusty AK-47s is not much of a challenge. When you fight someone like China or Russia who has the capablity to fight back, then you can say your the best because, to be frank, Britain has fought enemys on equal terms if not against us and still won.
We get a lot of stuff about how America has more freedom than everyone else, no it isn't, in fact, the US is PROBABLY less free than Britain, France or Germany.
Saying you have the best navy in the world is true so i wont complain about it.

The British have a reason to be arrogant because of how great the nation was and is now, i find Americans arrogance to be... misplaced.

Chomsky- I list specifically the United States, Britain, France, Russia and Japan, because these nations are infamous for hyper-patriotism. Of course other nations have such elements, but the nations I listed- probably more so. But I do think that the majority of people from each of the nations I listed are probably humble, but they seem to have the most significant minority of hyperpatriots as well.
Oh, and within every generaliation, there some element of truth. Generalisations may exaggerate, but some truth still exists.
Theres no such thing as british hyper-patriotism unless you watch last night of the proms.

isay- yes there is. I hear have heard many Britons speak as if their country could do and has done no wrong. Indeed, there is factions of hyper-nationalism in Britain.
Aside from the BNP here and especially in England you really don't see any. Most people don't bother or are not allowed to have pride or even wave a flag unless it's a major sporting event. To say that England are infamous for hyper-patriotism is weak, although if you bring the Scots or welsh and Irish into it then maybe it would ring true more.

As in most cases, wide generalizations are rarely accurate.
The above sentence IS a generalisation.
I find that people in the UK have a huge amount of pride but are more reserved and don't show it as openly as, say the US does. You will also find that people in Wales don't see themselves as British but as Welsh, same with Scotland but people from England don't see themselves as English but as British, its quite complex. People only show national pride when it comes to sporting events just as Isay has already mentioned and that does annoy me (not isays comment but only showing pride at sporting events only.)
We can't hang flags out because we will get told to take it down, can't fly the Union Jack with pride incase it upsets someone.
National anthems are a complete f*ck up aswell. Just to set the record straight, God Save the Queen is NOT the national anthem of England, Englands national anthem is Land of Hope and Glory, God Save the Queen is the Anthem of Britain and the Commonwealth Realms.
The BNP are not British, i dont see them as true British people, all they do is incite hatred for anyone who can't trace their lineage back to the norman conquest, someone like me. Anyone who can't will be thrown out of the country.

I get pretty sick of hearing about how people think Americans are so arrogant and that the Brits could tae the American Military. When I was deployed in Iraq, we saved the Brits a**es on several occasions. That was in simple conventional man to man combat. From my own first hand experienc, "brits could take americans in combat" is a bunch of crap. Our troops are battle hardened experienced troops. Our ground forces are very well trained and good at what they do. This may sound arrogant, but if defending the here-say againt my country makes me arrogant, so be it.

From what I have seen most Americans are taught by their family "You are the best person who ever existed. Also, everyone should treat you like a superior." Now put this thinking into the country. Very few Americans are willing to admit they have flaws.
