LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's biggest theme park has called off the country's first "National Muslim Fun Day" because of lack of interest, the park said Wednesday.

Alton Towers in central England was to open on September 17 for Muslims -- with halal food, a strict dress code and prayer areas.

Music, gambling and alcohol were to be banned for the day and theme park rides such as "Ripsaw," "Corkscrew" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" all segregated by sex.

-- - - - - - - - - - -

Limited food choices, no music, alcohol, or women, but plenty of prayer and strict codes.

I can't imagine why this failed to attract a large number of tourists.

It's like all the fun of living under the taliban, but you're never more than 10ft from a tacky gift shop.

WOuld you be interested in this theological theme park?

Yes, strict shariah law appeals to me on my day off
No, that doesn't seem like a lot of fun
No, since I'm not a Muslim fundamentalist
Yes, and I'd wear my tinfoil party hat

Festivities included virtual-suicide bombing booths, whack-a-jew, characters dressed up as all your favorite muslims (want to get a picture with arab dreamboat Al-Zarqawi?), and of course a kissing booth, followed promptly by a stoning the harlets booth.

Maybe they got the idea from these Fundamentalist Christians

"Christian theme park opens amid controversy

ORLANDO, Florida (CNN) -- While Disney World transports visitors into Tomorrowland, a new theme park that opened Monday takes travelers back to ancient Jerusalem.

The Holy Land Experience is a $16 million Christian theme park, filled with such Bible-based attractions as a replica of Herod's Temple and a re-creation of the street Jesus walked along before crucifixion.

There's also a replica of Jesus' tomb, and what founders say is the largest indoor model of first-century Jerusalem. Tourists who pay the $17 admission fee also can voyage to the Qumran caves, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found.

Although park founder Marvin Rosenthal says the goal is to spread Christianity, some critics take issue with the presentation.

Rosenthal grew up Jewish but is now a Baptist pastor. His ministry is called Zion's Hope, which critics say aims to convert Jews to Christianity.

Some Jewish leaders are troubled by some interpretations at the 15-acre park and prominently placed Jewish symbols. Rosenthal said they're true to the period, but the critics see something else.

"All the menorahs -- it's there to entice Jews to make them think this is a Jewish park and that there is a close connection between our ancestors and the notion that Jesus was divine and the son of God," said Rabbi Merrill Shapiro of Congregation Beth Am in Longwood, Florida.

Some Jewish leaders are concerned about the park's prominent placement of Jewish symbols, saying they encourage false links between Judaism and Christianity

Jewish leaders say one of the most talked-about attractions, the Wilderness Tabernacle, illustrates their concerns, since the multimedia presentation also features Jewish songs and prayers.

To critics like Shapiro, Rosenthal says simply: If you don't like it, don't come.

But Shapiro said it's not so simple.

"Those of us who don't like it won't come," he said, "but we're afraid that others who are not aware, who are not so sophisticated will come, will put down their money."

Idiotic behavior seems to be a foundation of all conservative fundamentalism.

Good thing it's not in Lebanon, or it would probably be a smoking ruin right now.

Religion and fun don't mix so a "muslim fun day" is an oxymoron.

The idea of theological or religious based theme parks seems kind of shallow or degrading to the religion itself.

The Christians already have several, why not a few Muslim ones?

margaret123- There are Muslim ones, but they are less obvious. Most theme parks in many Muslim countries have theocratic expectations, because the whole country, including the theme parks, have theocratic expectations.

This is different, however, as it is only 'Muslim' for one day, and is in a Western country.

Some people are offended that a western corporation would show respect for non-Judeo-Christian beliefs. It pisses them off, royally, so they make bitchy, gossipy, little ballots that reflect their prejudice.

- Is that in reference to the Judeo-Christian tradition of secularism? I am only inclined to Judeo-Christian traditions in that sense. That is, by the better label of 'Western' tradition. Afterall, I am neither Christian or Jewish.

I'm not sure about herzog, but I don't think his opinions are motivated by religion, and I don't even know what his spiritual beliefs are anyway.
